Telephone/Fax: +44 (0) 1496 840277 Activities/Attractions: The island has many important historical sites; Finlaggan, and the Kildaton Cross, being the foremost. The Museum of Islay Life and Islay Field Centre are situated in Port Charlotte, providing interesting information on the history and wildlife of Islay. Both are well worth a visit. With seven world famous malt whisky distilleries to visit, including Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Bowmore, Ardbeg, Bruichladdich, Caol Ila and Bunnahabhain, along with neighbouring Isle of Jura, this is a whisky lovers paradise. Islay has many beautiful wide open spaces in it's natural and unspoiled landscape, with long sandy clean beaches and rugged rocky shores, all hosting teeming wildlife. The RSPB bird reserve draws enthusiasts from many parts to see some of the 100 species that are present every day on the island, which reaches 120 species in the autumn/winter season. The over wintering barnacle geese are the main attraction in the winter. Islay is especially suited to the walker and cyclist, as although quite a large island, it is easy to get round on a bike and easy to explore on foot with free access to the unspoilt countryside. Excellent wild brown trout fishing is available throughout the fishing season, and such good fishing too, that in 2003 the European Fly Fishing Championships are to be held on the island in the autumn. Sea fishing is also available by boat, as are wild life sea trips, sailing, shooting/stalking and golf on the famous Machrie Links. Of course you might just come to Islay and do nothing but chill out, peace, perfect peace!
