Activities/Attractions: Less than 4km from Arradale house is the town of Carrickmacross. The Irish name for Carrickmacross is "Carraig Mhacaire Rois" which translated means, "The Rock of the Wooded Plain".
Carrickmacross, is one of the few surviving market towns in Ireland. It was developed around a Castle built by the Earl of Essex in 1630. The Convent of the St. Louis Nuns now stands on the original castle site. The area has a number of historical sites including the Round Tower in Inniskeen. St. Patrick's Cemetery Donaghmoyne is the final resting place of Cathal Bui Mac Giolla. The area is also well known for the quality of it's fishing lakes.
The town itself is over 350 years old but it has a church tradition dating back further to the 5th Century. Carrickmacross is famous for "Carrickmacross Lace" which had it's origins in the St. Louis Convent in the early 1800's. The lace was based on designs and methods initially developed in Florence, Italy. There is now a Lace Gallery located in Market Square in the town, where lace is displayed. Carrickmacross also offers an abundance of Restaurants, bars, coffee shops and nightclubs. Bicycle hire and taxi service also available in the town.
