Nearby is Ross House, birthplace of Violet Martin. She wrote under the pen name of Martin Ross and with Edith Somerville penned the celebrated "Reminiscences of an Irish R.M." recently made into a very successful television series. There are a variety of historical remains in the vicinity: churches, wells, cairns and other ruins. Lough Corrib (44,000 acres) is now
recognized as the leading Wild Brown Trout fishery (lake) in the World. It
holds a massive stock of indigenous brown trout, together with the very
large/specimen Ferox Trout. There are three centres for horse/pony riding and trekking all within a short drive of the Lodge. All the centres provide the protective clothing that is required and they stable a large selection of animals to try and suit everyone. They are long established and give an excellent service. There are 10 walking routes in the Moycullen and many of them are close to the Lodge. The length of the walks vary from 5 km to 16 km. Guests at Portarra Lodge can avail of a detailed maps of all 10 routes. Portarra Lodge is ideally situated as a base for touring.
