Although still referred to as the New Town, it was built in stages between 1765 and 1850, and retains much of the original architecture of the period. Edinburgh is also home to the world’s largest international arts festival. From the city centre you can see the open waters of the Firth of Forth, and within a few miles are the Lothians, an area of beautiful coast and countryside with a rich history which offers the very best of Scotland. Edinburgh's Old Town is rich in specialist shops, small restaurants and intimate little bars. Whether it is shopping, hotels, bars, cafes, restaurants or just memorable sights, there is a feast of attractions for the visitor to Edinburgh and to Scotland. "We stayed at Davenport House for five nights in July, and it was just fantastic nice. We just loved it!!! The Georgian-style was consistent and very tasteful. You felt like stepping into a 150 year old luxurious atmosphere! Clean and lovely all over! And the breakfast buffet was just marvellous with lots of fresh fruits and berries, and lots of other choices. All very nicely arranged. In the residents lounge were magazines, books and lots of DVDs free for the visitors to borrow, and all the rooms got flat screens and DVD-players. (You don't actually have much time for watching DVDs as tourist in Edinburgh, but must be a good choice for business travellers). The owners also were very charming and nice people. Very polite and discreet. We found the location Great King Street to be very good, because it was a very nice neighbourhood, and about ten minutes walk to the Princes Street, which is very central in town. We fell in love with both Davenport House and in Edinburgh, and will surely return!!"
